Today the most widely used water filtration systems use reverse osmosis, a 60 year old technology, that produces de-mineralized, acidic water and is highly inefficient. For each gallon of water it filters, over a gallon of water goes down the drain. Many popular brands produce three to four gallons of waste water for every gallon of water they produce.
Bottled Water is not a better answer. This is a largely unregulated industry and the National Resources Defense Council finding significant contamination in over 1/3 of the thousands of bottles of water they tested. In addition, the California Research Center found that plastic bottles leach health hazardous BPA’s linked to both breast and prostate cancer. Microfiltration is a membrane technical filtration process that removes contaminants from a fluid (liquid & gas) by passage through a microporous membrane.
A typical microfiltration membrane pore size range is 0.1 to 10 micrometres (µm). Microfiltration is fundamentally different from reverse osmosis and nanofiltration because those systems use pressure as a means of forcing water to go from low pressure to high pressure.
Microfiltration can use a pressurized system but it does not need to include pressure.
Commercial reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology has advanced only incrementally over the last 30 years.
However, Biomimetic Membranes for Water Purification, developed by Albuquerque-based Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico, represent a new approach to biomimetic membrane design and fabrication.
The invention uses self-assembly and atomic layer deposition (ALD) to advance the field of membrane technology for water filtration.
